The most important thing I look for in an early stage company:  What kind of problem the company wants to solve, and is it solving the right problem. 

In my experience, the hardest thing about early stage startups is Focus.

My experiences include 1) a Fortune 500 turnaround, 2) hypergrowth start-ups (one leading to a successful exit and one resulted in a Chapter 11 restructure), which gives me a broad spectrum of seeing what works and what doesn’t.

My "superpower" is helping to guide startups through the launch and growth phases of their companies.

James is the CFO at Yamaha Motor Ventures.  He provides financial and operational oversight for the firm, which includes all financial reporting and analysis, treasury, fund and portfolio management.

Prior to joining YMVSV, James held senior executive roles in hypergrowth start-ups and Global Fortune 500s, such as Beats, Zodiac Aerospace and ASSA ABLOY.  His experience spanned across leading M&As, successful turnaround of a global division, a $3B exit to Apple and a global financial carve-out of connected products.

James received his M.S. in Business Taxation from USC.  He also holds a dual B.S. in Business Economics and Physiological Science from UCLA.
