BACKGROUND

Kei Onishi is the Chairman of Yamaha Motor Ventures (YMV) and the Chief General Manager of the Corporate Strategy Center at Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. Transitioning from his previous role as CEO and Managing Director of YMV, Kei continues to provide strategic leadership as a member of the Board of Directors and the Investment Committee.


Throughout his career at Yamaha, Kei has been a driving force behind global innovation. He previously led the Group’s digital transformation initiatives, with a focus on digital marketing and data analytics. His extensive experience in corporate venture capital spans critical sectors such as AI, Robotics, and Connectivity. Furthermore, he has a proven track record in new business development and has successfully led multiple strategic initiatives within the Yamaha Motor Group.


Kei began his career as a manufacturing engineer in Southeast Asia, providing him with a foundational understanding of global operations and technical excellence. He holds a Master of Science in Engineering from Nagoya University and an MBA from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.


In his current dual capacity, Kei integrates his deep expertise in technology, digital strategy, and venture investment to align YMV’s activities with Yamaha’s long-term global growth. He is dedicated to ensuring that the transformative solutions discovered through YMV become core drivers of Yamaha’s corporate and digital evolution.

My decision to join Yamaha was based on the company's strong commitment to a culture of passion and people-centered values, which deeply resonates with me. As someone who is constantly curious and eager to explore new horizons in terms of places, cultures, people, foods, technologies, and businesses, I find Yamaha's multinational scope and diverse operations incredibly stimulating.


In particular, my work within Yamaha Motor Ventures/CVC offers an exciting opportunity to delve into the world of corporate venture capital and innovation. This role allows me to not only explore new possibilities within the organization, but also to engage with external partners and companies to drive positive change and growth. I am thrilled to be a part of a team that is dedicated to discovering and supporting cutting-edge technologies and businesses that will shape the future of Yamaha and the industry as a whole.


What do you look for the most in early-stage startups?

For early-stage companies, I prioritize passionate and talented founders who align with Yamaha's culture. As we navigate both exciting and challenging times together, a strong team dynamic is crucial to success.


What do you love to do outside of work?

Outside of work, Kei is a golfer and loves hiking. In his downtime, Kei is an avid reader and particularly enjoys books on technology and innovation. He is also passionate about international travel and discovering new cultures and cuisines.


What’s your next adventure with Yamaha? Which Yamaha products would you love to try next and where?

I'm a big fan of motorcycles. I would love to get XSR700.
